Union Hockey 2011: A Year to Remember

As the calendar year of 2011 comes to a close, the Official Blog of Union Hockey takes a look back at a landmark year for Union College Hockey. While there were plenty of highlights to choose from, here are the top moments, in pictures, from each of the past 12 months.

SEPTEMBER

September 28, 2011, Albany, NY – Union is picked to finish second in the ECAC Hockey preseason coaches and media polls, the highest that the Dutchmen have ever been picked in either poll. Earlier in the month, head coach Rick Bennett meets with the 2011-12 team for the first time, and preparation for the current season begins.

CAPTURING THE MOMENT: “I’m going to let the polls be the polls. The polls don’t play. I guess that’s not a bad thing.” - Bennett

OCTOBER

October 29, 2011, Schenectady, NY – The Dutchmen celebrate the accomplishments of the 2010-11 team one final time by raising two banners at Messa Rink, honoring Union’s first Cleary Cup and NCAA Tournament bid in the Division I era. Graduates Luke Cain and John Simpson return to help raise the banners in a ceremony before Union’s game against American International. Union earns a 5-2 win over the Yellow Jackets on a memorable night.

CAPTURING THE MOMENT: “I thought it was excellent. I couldn’t be happier for the fans, the past players, the school. It was kind of fun to see it.” – Rick Bennett.
