Union Hockey 2011: A Year to Remember

As the calendar year of 2011 comes to a close, the Official Blog of Union Hockey takes a look back at a landmark year for Union College Hockey. While there were plenty of highlights to choose from, the blog will feature the top moments from each month this year, starting with January and February…

JANUARY

Jan. 28, 2011, Schenectady, NY - Union earned a 3-2 win over No. 1 Yale at Messa Rink, marking the first time the Dutchmen beat a top-ranked team in program history. Senior Adam Presizniuk scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, and sophomore goaltender Keith Kinkaid stopped 12 of 13 shots in the third period, withstanding a number of Yale scoring chances in the waning moments of the game.

CAPTURING THE MOMENT: “It feels great to have revenge. They embarrassed us at Ingalls. It feels good to get the win here with our fans. They support us very well. They made it a great game.” - Kinkaid, referring to Yale’s 5-0 win over Union earlier in the 2010-11 season.

FEBRUARY

Feb. 26, 2011, Schenectady, NY - It was fitting that Union clinched its first ever Cleary Cup (ECAC Hockey regular season title) on Senior Night, a testament to the class with the most wins since the program moved to Division I in 1991. Even more fitting, three of the five goal scorers in Union’s 5-0 win over Princeton were seniors -Luke Cain, Stephane Boileau, and John Simpson. With the win in their regular season finale, Union capped off an incredible 14-1-1 stretch in ECAC Hockey play.

CAPTURING THE MOMENT: “It’s a great, great feeling. Union struggled for a couple of years. Now, the program is high-level. It’s a great feeling for us, being seniors, doing this in our last year.” - Stephane Boileau

“It’s great. It’s four years of hard work paying off here. It’s not just this team, it’s the teams that have come before it that really laid the foundation and made steps every single year. This is the culmination of that work.” - Luke Cain
