Union at No. 11 in the Polls/Links
Coming off a weekend sweep against former No. 1 Yale and Brown, the Dutchmen moved up to No. 11 in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Polls. (click here) Union was ultimately hurt in the polls by RPI’s win over Yale on Saturday night, combined with the lack of favorable results in matchups among ranked teams last weekend. This weekend could be different. Here are some games...

Head Coach Nate Leaman On the third period: “In the third period I thought momentum swung their way and our goaltender played well. It was a great game.” On Yale’s play: “They’re a good hockey team, and I think we have a good hockey team, and it was a great hockey game.”   On scoring the first goal: “The first goal was big for us just to get the first one, get on the board, and get our...

Morning Previews of Tonight's Tilt
After eight weeks of waiting, Union finally gets another shot at Yale tonight at Messa Rink. The Dutchmen are 5-1-0 in their last six league games since dropping a 5-0 decision at Yale on Dec. 5, a game that was a lot closer than the final score indicates. Union is in search of its first win against a Top 5 opponent since Jan. 9, 2009, when the Dutchmen earned a 3-2 win at No. 5 Princeton. Coach Barr reflects on tomorrow night’s contest against No. 1 Yale, and the impact of the freshman class through the first 2/3 of the season. Our matchup against Yale should be an exciting event for the whole school.  It is not too often that the No. 1 team in the nation comes to Messa Rink.  We are approaching it as we would any other game.  We have prepared the same way we prepared for...

For the first time this season, Union rallied from a third period deficit, scoring twice in the final frame against pesky Harvard to earn a 2-1 win at Messa Rink. Sophomore forward Jeremy Welsh tied it, and freshman defenseman Mat Bodie scored the game-winner for the Dutchmen, who overcame a 40 save effort from Harvard goaltender Ryan Carroll (click here). Post-Game Quotes: Union falls 4-1 to Dartmouth
Head Coach Nate Leaman:  On Union’s play tonight: “I thought we got too cute. I don’t think tonight overall we stuck to our game plan. I thought we were really undisciplined in a lot of areas of our game tonight.”  On Dartmouth goalie James Mello: “He was outstanding. We had two breakaways, we had a number of point blank opportunities… He didn’t let us back in the game, he was very good.”  On...

Behind the Bench with Coach Barr: A View of the...
This week, Coach Barr shares his thoughts on the Pairwise Rankings system and previews the weekend games against Dartmouth and Harvard. The Pairwise Rankings are obviously important when it comes to tournament time in March and every game in the second half of the season has a dramatic effect on those rankings.  We do pay attention to the Pairwise Rankings as a staff, but I think it is important...

What a way to close out a road trip
Last night, Union played some of its best hockey of the season in beating Cornell 5-1 at Lynah Rink, ending a seven game winless streak against the Big Red. A lot of superlatives from this game. -Brock Matheson scores his first career game-winning goal -Daniel Carr pots two power play goals to tie Union’s single-season record set by Chris Ford in 1993. -Union outshoots Cornell 42-17 for...

Post-Game Quotes: Union defeats Colgate 2-1
Head Coach Nate Leaman On Union’s play against Colgate: “I thought we lacked focus and intensity. I thought we had good intensity the first five minutes and then I thought we lacked focus. We turned a lot pucks over and I thought Keith (Kinkaid) played a heck of a game. If it wasn’t for Keith I don’t think we win that game.” Freshman forward Josh Jooris On the team...

Behind the Bench with Coach Barr: One Year to the...
I really believe that most of our guys have no idea what our record or streak at (Colgate’s) Starr Rink is.  Inevitably some of the players will get asked about it this week, but I think most of them will forget about it right after.  The upperclassmen will remember that we didn’t play well at Colgate last year, so I am sure they will look to change that trend on Friday.  We know we will...

Post-Game Quotes: Union defeats Clarkson 8-1
Head Coach Nate Leaman On the mood of the team after the first period: “I think we were able to learn from the Bemidji State game. We had a good first period against Bemidji, but we were down 1-0 and we got away from our game plan. Fortunately tonight, we stayed with our game plan, and we got a couple of bounces in the second period.” On if there was a sense of urgency in the second...

I thought it was Keith’s best game in probably his last ten.” On the physical play: “That was the most physical game I think we played all year. They’re a physical team; I thought...

In this week’s segment of Behind the Bench, Coach Barr discusses how the Union coaching staff uses games from previous years in scouting ECAC opponents.               We use previous year’s games in league quite often when scouting other opponents.  We see all of the teams at least twice a year, and teams tend to have similar tendencies from year to year especially if they have the same...
